Actinic keratosis (AK) is a scaly, rough, crusty lesion that grows on the skin in spots that are exposed to the sun. It most often appears on the face, lips, ears, scalp, shoulders, and other places regularly exposed. Usually, the regions of the skin affected will present with several lesions. As such, the plural of this condition is called actinic keratoses. The lesions develop slowly with time and might disappear and reappear. The lesions are often itchy, uncomfortable, and eventually become swollen. During a comprehensive skin evaluation, a member of our team at Restoration Dermatology of Nashville, TN will analyze the lesion, at times implementing dermoscopy. This skin condition is considered precancerous so it could be a cause of concern if it isn't treated and could become cancer. Excision of the lesion(s) will probably be advocated and discussed during your examination.

Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential so a single actinic keratosis (or even multiple keratoses) does not become cancer. The treatment choice recommended will vary, depending on several factors, like your health and age, skin color, how widespread the condition is, growth characteristics of the lesion(s), area, etc. Usual treatment choices include:

  • Cryosurgery – the method of taking liquid nitrogen and using it to destroy lesions
  • Electrodesiccation and Curettage – a process that removes skin lesions by scratching the skin down to an unaffected layer
  • Medication – certain medications can be beneficial in reducing the look and size of lesions and reducing the prevalence of scarring
  • Chemical Peels – certain ingredients found in chemical peels can remove the top layer of the affected skin, prompting new growth and replacing the damaged tissue

I was able to get in very quickly and discuss my concerns with a few moles that I have. Dr. Mishra put me at ease and assured me they were benign, but also gave me some options for removal if it was something I wanted to do in the future. I didn’t feel pressured for unnecessary procedures, in fact he seemed very against doing anything that wasn’t 100% necessary which was a nice change from some other doctors. I’m recommending my husband to him as well for his rosacea.
