The Skin Cancer Foundation reports that 20 percent of Americans will have skin cancer. The high prevalence of skin cancer makes regular screenings very important, particularly when you have a personal or family history of skin cancer. Early detection is vital to give you more treatment options and better results. Along with many advanced skin cancer treatments, Restoration Dermatology offers comprehensive skin cancer screenings along with biopsies of abnormal growths. To schedule a skin cancer exam, contact us in Nashville, TN.
Dr. Vineet Mishra looks for four types of skin cancer during a skin cancer exam:
- Actinic Keratoses (AK): This type tends to form after the age of 40 years and on regions of the skin that have been exposed to the sun, like the head, throat, hands, and arms. AKs appear as scaly, dry spots and are commonly deemed precancerous because it has the potential to develop into squamous cell carcinoma.
- Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): This is the most common type of skin cancer. BCC can form anywhere on your skin and might look like a pink spot or a flesh-colored or pearl-like bump. BCC has to be treated because it has the potential to develop into the nerves and bones, causing disfigurements and damage.
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): This is the second most common form of skin cancer. Developing on skin that gets the most UV exposure, SCC looks like scaly spots; red, firm lumps; and/or sores that heal and reopen. All these should be removed to prevent disfigurement and damage.
- Melanoma: This type of cancer develops unexpectedly as a dark spot on the skin. Dr. Mishra uses the ABCDs to identify melanoma — asymmetry, border, color, and diameter. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, melanoma accounts for only one percent of skin cancer cases, but it causes most skin cancer deaths. For this reason, melanoma needs to be treated as soon as possible once it's diagnosed.
Checking Your Skin for Cancer
At your skin exam, Dr. Mishra will check your whole body for moles, birthmarks, and any abnormal growths. He might produce a mole map of spots to mark regions of concern and also to quickly identify new spots at future screenings. Dr. Mishra will explain to you how to perform a self-exam between your visits.
Sometimes, Dr. Mishra might take a biopsy of a suspicious spot. He will numb the skin, then shave a little sample. The sample will be mailed to a pathology lab for evaluation. When Dr. Mishra gets your pathology report, you will be contacted to hear the results.

Dr. Mishra is one of my favorite doctors I have had. He is great is great and knowledgable and I trust his treatment plans always.
Dr. Mishra and his team were incredibly professional and dedicated to help find the right medical solution for my skin condition. I highly recommend this place. It’s a nice center that makes you feel great inside and out.
I was able to get in very quickly and discuss my concerns with a few moles that I have. Dr. Mishra put me at ease and assured me they were benign, but also gave me some options for removal if it was something I wanted to do in the future. I didn’t feel pressured for unnecessary procedures, in fact he seemed very against doing anything that wasn’t 100% necessary which was a nice change from some other doctors. I’m recommending my husband to him as well for his rosacea.
