Cancer can be a scary word, but for people diagnosed with skin cancer, Mohs surgery at Restoration Dermatology may be the answer. Mohs surgery is a process that carefully and meticulously removes cancerous skin cells. The goal of the method is to take as little of your unaffected skin tissue as we can while still delivering an optimal success rate for skin cancer treatment. The surgical technique is used to remove squamous and basal cell carcinomas and melanomas, along with a few other, lesser-known kinds of tumors. Our team is extensively trained in the Mohs approach. We begin the procedure by thoroughly removing the malignant tissue one layer at a time. After each layer, Dr. Vineet Mishra will inspect the cell makeup of the skin to find out whether cancer is still present. Call our Nashville, TN location today to set up your Mohs procedure.

In this process, a member of our staff will typically utilize local anesthetics to numb the affected region before incisions are made for removal. The incisions may be compared to a map (similar to a clock face) and are designed to correspond with the orientation of the skin that has been removed. The excised layer is suspended, processed, and then examined under the microscope. When additional cancer roots are detected, they're marked with the corresponding map and the process is repeated. The method continues until a fresh layer with no remaining cancer is achieved. The amount of layers removed is dependent on the stage of the cancer and how long it was present. The conclusion of the process will render a wound. Healing solutions vary, from easy sutures to close the wound to more complicated cosmetic (plastic) operations for larger wounds.

I had a squamous cell cancer removed from the top of my head. Obviously, there is not much flesh or skin to work with, but Dr. Mishra did an excellent job removing the affected area and closing the wound. I highly recommend him to anyone needing Mohs surgery.

Dr. Mishra removed a squamous cell carcinoma from the bridge of my nose one week ago via MOHS surgery. I had the stitches removed today. They gave me a collagen supplement to encourage healing and a silicone gel with SPF to wear once I remove the bandaid this weekend. In a month, I'll have a laser treatment to improve the scar, but considering what had to be removed, it looks great. I drove over an hour to see Dr. Mishra and I would do it again. Dr. Mishra did a great job explaining how I should care for the wound and as a result, it's healing very well. I can't imagine anyone being excited about getting anything cut off their face, but that's when you want someone who will do a great job. Thank you, Dr. Mishra.
